Nauticus Kicks Off Summer Season with Memorial Day Festivities
Nauticus will kick off a fun-filled summer season this Memorial Day weekend, beginning with the dedication of a new Wisconsin model and concluding with its annual ceremony to honor the fallen aboard the real Battleship Wisconsin.
On Saturday, May 28 at 11:30 a.m. Nauticus will officially unveil fresh changes to its Wisconsin Vista area, which overlooks the Battleship Wisconsin, with the exciting addition of a brand new 114” model of the ship at 1/96 scale. The model, which was built and donated to Nauticus by master model maker Keith Mullen of “BaD” Ship Models in Palominos, Arizona, is valued at $50,000. In the coming months, visitors will also be able to enjoy the popular film "The Last Battleship" on a continuous loop, as well as participate in an interactive theater experience that tests their naval trivia knowledge.
On Monday, May 30, at 4:30 p.m., the City of Norfolk, the USS Wisconsin Association, the Fleet Reserve Association, Honor and Remember, Nauticus & the Hampton Roads Naval Museum will commemorate Memorial Day aboard the Battleship Wisconsin with a special service. This event is free and open to the public.
Norfolk Mayor Paul D. Fraim will provide special greetings and remarks at the commemoration, which will include Presentation of Colors by the Norfolk Police Department Honor Guard, a memorial service, a Two Bell Service, the tossing of a memorial wreath and a closing rendition of Taps. This is the third year that Nauticus has hosted a Memorial Day service aboard the battleship. Following the service, attendees are encouraged to attend the free WHRO Memorial Day Concert – Symphony in the Park, featuring the Virginia Symphony, from 6 until 8 p.m. Town Point Park will open at 3 p.m.
Beginning Monday, May 30, Nauticus and the Battleship Wisconsin will be open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., through Labor Day.
