New Summer Film Festival Aboard the Battleship Wisconsin!
This July, 2010, Nauticus will host an inaugural summer film festival on the stern of the Wisconsin. The Friday Fantail Film Festival will be held each Friday in July and feature popular patriotic films including Independence Day (7/9), Master and Commander (7/16), Tuskegee Airmen (7/23), and Mister Roberts (7/30). Each film will be shown at 8:30 P.M. for $3 a ticket. Doors open early at 7:45 p.m., so guests may enjoy refreshments from the bar and concession stand while watching the sunset on the Elizabeth River. Camp/beach chairs and blankets are welcomed on deck.
"Full steam ahead," said Nauticus Assistant Executive Director, Stephen E. Kirkland, echoing Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim's recent remarks at a ceremony marking the transfer of ownership of the Battleship Wisconsin from the Navy to the City. "We promised the community new programming and an innovative approach to this iconic battleship, and we're committed to exceeding expectations."
Nauticus anticipates these movie events, offered at a low cost in a unique and exciting venue, will be popular for both date nights and family outings. Beer, wine, sodas and popular movie snacks will be available for purchase. “This is the community’s ship,” said Kirkland. “We want the community to enjoy it throughout the summer.”
The Battleship Wisconsin will also soon be available for special event rentals. More information about upcoming events can be found at www.BattleshipWisconsinFun.com.
Since 2001, 2.2 million visitors have toured the USS Wisconsin, which saw action in World War II, Korea and the first Gulf War. Nauticus is privileged to be tasked with helping interpret the ship's history for today's generation and those to come. Admission to tour the ship is included in the Nauticus daily admission and membership packages.
