Think You Know Nauticus? It’s Time to Take Another Look

Nauticus has gone full speed ahead this spring, with new programs, exhibits and visitor experiences both in the museum and aboard the Battleship Wisconsin.

Our portal to third floor exhibits and our Preble Deck have gotten a spring makeover! If you haven’t visited in awhile, make sure to take note of the changes on your way to seeing Our Mighty Seaport, a new, interactive exhibit which explores about the fascinating world of maritime commerce. Discover both what’s coming into our port and what’s being shipped from Virginia to far corners of the globe. Families can navigate a tugboat down a busy waterway and receive “real time” information on ships sailing past Nauticus. Venture outside the exhibit walls and catch a glimpse of giant cranes, tugs, sailboats and cargo ships from the newly renovated Elizabeth River Observation Deck. Our Mighty Seaport celebrates maritime commerce from the most unique spot in town – along a remarkable working waterfront.

Outside the building, two new boating experiences await. Coming soon in Nauticus’ front pools, you’ll find remote control tugboats – or, if you’d prefer a longer journey, climb aboard a whaleboat which served in the Persian Gulf War with the Wisconsin and go for a quick Elizabeth River trip around the ship. You’ll learn facts and history while experiencing the Battleship a whole new way.

Visitors will be able to explore even more of the Wisconsin’s interior with a brand new guided tour, “Main Street USN,” which focuses on “life at sea” for a wartime sailor. Designed for families, this 45-minute tour will include the ship laundry, tailor shop, library, bakery, donut shop, enlisted berthing and galley.

Memorial Day weekend kicks off a six-week run of Swingtime Salute: An On-Deck Revue. Tickets are now on sale for this exciting night of starlit entertainment on board the Wisconsin. Produced in partnership with the Virginia Stage Company (VSC), the show recreates the 40’s-era touring variety show sure to “entertain the troops,” with dashing sailors and dishy dames, accompanied by a live, on-stage band. It’s a retro celebration the whole family will enjoy! Swingtime Salute will show Thursday through Sunday evenings at 8 pm from May 31 through July 8. Tickets are $30 for Thursday shows & $40 for Friday – Sunday performances. Children ages 4 – 12 are $20 to any performance. Discounts are available for military, AAA members, Nauticus/VSC members and groups. For tickets, call 1-800-982-2787, order online at or stop by the VSC Box Office.
