Shark Resources

  • Shark Distribution
    • Concepts: There are over 350 species of sharks found in the oceans today worldwide. Sharks come in many different sizes, shapes and colors. Some of these factors are dependent on their environment. Virginia Science SOL's: 1.7, 2.5, 2.7, 4.5, LS.9

  • Shark/Human Interaction
    • Concepts: Sharks cause fatal injuries to about 12-25 humans per year. Humans kill about 100 million sharks per year. People kill sharks for meat, medicine, oil, skin, and fish food as well as for sport. Sharks have long gestation periods and give birth to small litters of pups. Over harvesting can cause a strong decline in the population. Virginia Science SOL's: 1.7, 2.5, 2.7, 4.5, LS.9

  • Shark Coloration
    • Concepts: Many sharks are a grayish or brownish color when seen from above and a paler or whitish color underneath. Some sharks have spots, stripes or seemingly random coloration. Color schemes can help sharks blend in or camouflage with their environment. Virginia Science SOL's: K.4, 3.4, 4.5
