PORT TO PORT: A SHIP'S JOURNEY OBJECTIVES

Lesson One: Preparing For Your Journey

  1. Students will construct a ship's log to record data.
  2. Students will label latitude and longitude handout.
  3. Students will complete weather terms handout.

Lesson Two: Meet Your Ship

  1. Students will access the internet to locate their assigned ship.
  2. Students will prepare a written report about the home port of their assigned ship.
  3. Students will prepare a written report about the characteristics of their assigned ship.

Lesson Three: Plotting The Course

  1. Students will access the internet to record their ship's past reported data in their ship's log.
  2. Students will access the internet to record ship's new data for length of time determined by teacher.
  3. Students will plot ship's course on map.
  4. Students will estimate ship's port-o-call.
  5. Students will prepare a written report about the port-o-call of their assigned ship.

Lesson Four: Adding It Up

  1. Students will determine total distance traveled.
  2. Students will create a spreadsheet and bar graph using the various distances traveled.
  3. Students will determine mean, median, mode and range of distance traveled.
  4. Students will utilize problem solving skills to determine if their ship encountered stormy or foggy weather.
  5. Students will utilize problem solving skills to form a hypothesis about why low daily travel distances occurred.

Lesson Five: Environmental Impact

  1. Students will access the Global Invasive Species database and collect data for invasive species for their ship's home port and port-o-call.
  2. Students will write a short report on the role ships play in introducing invasive species into ports and what is being done to counteract this problem for their assigned ports.
  3. Students will access the internet and research the environmental impact of ships on local waterways and estuaries.
