PORT TO PORT: A SHIP'S JOURNEY OBJECTIVES
Lesson One: Preparing For Your Journey
- Students will construct a ship's log to record data.
- Students will label latitude and longitude handout.
- Students will complete weather terms handout.
Lesson Two: Meet Your Ship
- Students will access the internet to locate their assigned ship.
- Students will prepare a written report about the home port of their assigned ship.
- Students will prepare a written report about the characteristics of their assigned ship.
Lesson Three: Plotting The Course
- Students will access the internet to record their ship's past reported data in their ship's log.
- Students will access the internet to record ship's new data for length of time determined by teacher.
- Students will plot ship's course on map.
- Students will estimate ship's port-o-call.
- Students will prepare a written report about the port-o-call of their assigned ship.
Lesson Four: Adding It Up
- Students will determine total distance traveled.
- Students will create a spreadsheet and bar graph using the various distances traveled.
- Students will determine mean, median, mode and range of distance traveled.
- Students will utilize problem solving skills to determine if their ship encountered stormy or foggy weather.
- Students will utilize problem solving skills to form a hypothesis about why low daily travel distances occurred.
Lesson Five: Environmental Impact
- Students will access the Global Invasive Species database and collect data for invasive species for their ship's home port and port-o-call.
- Students will write a short report on the role ships play in introducing invasive species into ports and what is being done to counteract this problem for their assigned ports.
- Students will access the internet and research the environmental impact of ships on local waterways and estuaries.
