Student Pages - Lesson 5 - Activity 3: Wind Speed and Pressure

Return To Index

In this activity you will add real-time wind and pressure readings. Pressure readings are always found in the upper right corner of all station symbols. Use all four numbers of the pressure reading when you plot it on the map. Most pressure readings start with 29 or 30 unless a strong storm is occurring.

1. Use the link below to gather real-time weather data for pressure readings and wind direction for the 13 weather stations.

When you record the pressure readings from the weather browser, you will need to convert them from millibars to inches of mercury. Use the link below to convert your readings.

http://www.onlineconversion.com/pressure.htm

  1. Enter the readings from the weather browser in the top field.
  2. Click on millibars in the left panel
  3. Click on inch of mercury in the right panel
  4. Click on convert at the bottom of the panels
  5. Record the new pressure reading in your spread sheet

Record your data in your spread sheet as you collect it.

As a group, discuss how wind and/or clouds affect temperatures and pressure readings.

Summarize your findings in a report to share with the class.
